Scottish Day 25 March 2009 - Report by Barrie Sheard
Scottish Day 2009
Again the NPTA were blessed with kind weather on March 25th when they again ran their Scotland training Day up this time at Perth Race Course. This is our fourteenth such day and 75 delegates took the opportunity of updating their knowledge on a variety of important subjects, plus hearing the results at first hand of our latest Rodent Survey Report and being able to meet colleagues old and new during the lunch and refreshment breaks. Without any doubt getting the right venue certainly sets the atmosphere for any such day and being in the executive suite which we used as our seminar room was just perfect.
Subjects covered were:
- There's a Rat in the Kitchen - by Phil Bentley, Head of Health, Safety & Risk Management for the 'Little Chef' chain.
- Bed Bugs - An integrated Control Strategy - by Robin Moss of Killgerm.
- National Rodent Survey Report 2007/08 - by our ex Chairman Barrie Sheard NPTA.
- New Avenues of Income - by Peter Crowden - the new Chairman of the NPTA.
- Latest Product News from Killgerm - by Graham Bingham and Peter Fielding.
An interesting innovation started at the 2008 event was after lunch separate "break-out" events whereby each delegate was able to choose from 3 specialised subjects
- Practical Control of Mosquitoes and Biting midges.
- Practical Snaring demonstration our within the racecourse
- The Avishock bird control system - its introduction and training
Delegates interviewed at the conclusion of the different sessions felt all 3 had been particularly useful for their particular business and also that of their employers.
The day was again kindly sponsored by Killgerm Chemicals Limited of Ossett in West Yorkshire and has certainly become a much awaited annual event within the Scotland Pest Controllers diary of events not to be missed. We wish to acknowledge publicly how grateful the NPTA are for such up front promotion of our aims and objectives in such a practical manner. Thank you indeed Killgerm Chemicals from us all at the the NPTA. Readers may care to know that in the July issue of "Today's Technician", the NPTA's quarterly magazine, there will be a more detailed and fuller report.
The day was once again FREE to NPTA members.

Scottish Day 2009 - Part Two!
This year following the conclusion of the Day's Training at 3.30 p.m. we put on the much awaited "Bat Awareness and Legislation" Course. Presented by Dr. Penelope Angold of AMPA Associations. This was the first time this Course had been held in Scotland and from the number of delegates attending was a marked success. It has to be said and repeated again that many Technicians believe they are only there to kill pests and because all UK bats are protected and safeguarded species it doesn't affect them. How wrong can they be!
Being a professional pest control person today in 2009 one is expected to be fully knowledgeable about both pest and non pest species. No way is this evidenced by a growing number of Technicians up and down the UK who take this course wherever we have run same.
