Asset Skills
Asset Skills writes national occupational standards for Pest Control and is now looking to produce a case study of a person working in the sector.  To understand what is involved existing case studies can be found on our website: The purpose of the case study is to show case the sector and to inform people who might be interested in a career in the sector. Ideally we would like to show a range of jobs within the sector.

There would be no need for a volunteer to write their own case study as this will be undertaken by a researcher who will ring and ask questions.  The volunteer would be expected to approve the words which would be added to the case studies on the Asset Skills website.

Food and Environment Research Agency (Fera)
The parasitology team at the Food and Environment Research Agency (Fera) are commencing a trichinella project to support the UK’s trichinella-free status (please see attached flyer for more information). This project urgently requires a supply of fresh fox carcasses from across the UK and we are therefore trying to build up a network of people who may be able to help.

We will generally organise collection of freshly killed foxes for use in the project within a few working days.

Please read the PDF (224kb) here.

Badger cull challenged
“The plans for a cull of badgers in two pilot areas – West Gloucestershire and West Somerset – to prevent the spread of bovine TB in cattle, was challenged by the Badger Trust in the High Court in June.

The challenge to the ‘legality’ of the decision by Defra secretary Caroline Spelman to allow culling this autumn was on three grounds. These were that: it would not meet the strict legal test of ‘preventing the spread of the disease’, but may in fact increase it; that Defra's cost impact assessment was ‘flawed’ and that Defra did not have the legal power to issue statutory guidance to the licensee, Natural England, to cull badgers.

But all three arguments have been dismissed and, unsurprisingly, a Defra spokesman said the department was ‘pleased’ with the verdict and would work to ensure the pilot culls can now begin ‘as soon as is practical’.

According to a report on the Farmers Guardian website, he said: “We are pleased with the judgement. No one wants to cull badgers but last year bovine TB led to the slaughter of over 26,000 cattle and to help eradicate the disease it needs to be tackled in badgers. We will continue to work with the farming industry so badger control in two pilot areas can start as soon as is practical.”

NPTA Rodent Survey 2010 - 2011

"our figures inevitably under-estimate the true scale of rodent problems across the country"

The latest annual survey results confirm our serious concern that Government austerity measures are compromising the country’s ability to keep on top of rodent infestations, even before the full effect of local authority economies has been felt.

Bee Careful Out There
It's that time of year again when you start getting phone calls saying "come quick, we've got loads of wasps flying around!", when you know you will be dealing with bees.  Given how important these creatures are with regard to crop pollination, you should of course do everything you can to avoid killing them, but sometimes you may have to.  If you do decide to go down that route - be very careful.
