Giving Something Back to the Industry That Built My Career
Adrian Gough, Pest Risk Management Group Limited
After 28 years working within the pest control industry, including more than 25 years as a business owner, I have seen our sector evolve enormously. Standards have improved, customer expectations have increased, technology has advanced, and the role of the modern pest professional has become far more technical and compliance-driven than ever before.
However, one of the biggest challenges now facing our industry is not rodents, insects, audits, or legislation.
It is people.
It is widely recognised that a significant proportion of the UK pest control workforce (estimated at 40%) is expected to retire within the next decade. With decades of practical knowledge leaving the industry, we face a genuine risk of losing valuable experience that simply cannot be replaced overnight through qualifications alone.
That experience matters.
It is the experience of dealing with difficult infestations, understanding client expectations, managing audited sites, navigating food manufacturing environments, handling compliance pressures, and learning how to build trust with customers over many years.
Like many others who started in this industry years ago, I learned through experience, mistakes, hard work, more mistakes and very occasionally guidance from others already established within the sector. Looking back, I know I would have benefited enormously from having someone available as a mentor or sounding board during those early years, which unfortunately I didn’t.
That is why I would like to offer something back to the industry that has served me so well.
I would like to provide mentoring support to somebody newer to the industry, particularly a business owner or ambitious pest professional who has the drive to succeed but perhaps lacks confidence, direction, or experience in certain areas of the trade.
This is not consultancy in the traditional sense, nor is it a commercial coaching programme, there are plenty within the professional arena.
It is simply an opportunity to help somebody progress.
The support could involve:
- Guidance on expanding into the contract market
- Advice on servicing food manufacturing and audited environments
- Assistance with compliance systems and documentation
- Help understanding client expectations within professional sectors
- Practical field-based advice on pests they may not yet have encountered
- Business development discussions
- Acting as a sounding board when difficult decisions arise
Sometimes, having somebody experienced to speak to can make all the difference.
The pest control industry has provided many of us with successful careers, long-term relationships, and opportunities we may never have expected when we first started. I believe those of us with extensive experience have a responsibility to help develop the next generation of professionals entering the sector.
If we want the industry to remain professional, respected, and technically competent in the years ahead, knowledge transfer will be critical.
Qualifications are important, but mentorship and practical experience are equally valuable.
For me, this is simply about giving something back.
I have benefited greatly from this industry over the last three decades, and if I can help even one person build a successful, professional, and sustainable future within pest management, then it will be time well spent.
