Government Launches Youth Jobs Grant and
Major Employment Drive for Young People
The UK Government has announced a major youth employment initiative aimed at helping young people gain skills, training and employment while supporting employers to develop their future workforce.
The programme includes a range of incentives designed to encourage businesses to recruit young people, alongside wider reforms to apprenticeships and employment support.
At the centre of the announcement is the Youth Guarantee, a commitment to ensure that every young person aged 16–24 has access to opportunities in work, education or training. The initiative will invest £2.5 billion over the next three years, supporting almost one million young people and unlocking up to 500,000 jobs, training and learning opportunities.
Youth Jobs Grant
One of the key measures is the introduction of a Youth Jobs Grant, which will provide £3,000 to employers for every young person aged 18–24 they recruit who has been receiving Universal Credit and actively looking for work for six months.
The scheme is expected to support around 60,000 young people over the next three years, helping businesses bring new talent into the workforce while providing young people with valuable employment opportunities.
Support for Apprenticeships and Early Careers
The announcement also includes additional support for apprenticeships, including a £2,000 incentive for SMEs recruiting apprentices aged 16–24, alongside wider reforms aimed at making apprenticeships more flexible and accessible for employers.
In addition, the Jobs Guarantee scheme will be expanded to include young people aged 18–24, providing a six-month paid job placement with employment costs covered by the Government for eligible participants.
Opportunities for the Pest Control Sector
For sectors facing skills shortages, these initiatives could provide a valuable opportunity to bring new talent into the workforce while benefiting from financial support for recruitment and training.
Pest control is an industry that offers long-term career opportunities, technical development and the chance to play an important role in protecting public health, businesses and the environment.
Those interested in learning more about careers in the sector can explore the Careers in Pest Control Hub, developed in partnership with the Royal Society for Public Health: https://www.rsph.org.uk/
The hub provides information on career pathways, training opportunities and how individuals can get started in the industry.
Industry Perspective
Commenting on the announcement, Kevin Lawrenson, said:
“Initiatives such as the Youth Jobs Grant present a real opportunity for sectors like pest control to bring new talent into the industry. Our work plays a critical role in protecting public health, food businesses and local communities, yet like many technical industries we need to attract the next generation of skilled professionals.
Financial incentives that help employers create entry-level opportunities can make a real difference, particularly for small and medium-sized pest control businesses. By connecting these programmes with initiatives like the Careers in Pest Control hub, we can help more young people discover a profession that offers long-term careers, technical skills and the opportunity to make a genuine impact.”
