The Invoice You Never Get Paid For
Most pest controllers know the feeling.
You’ve taken the call. Rearranged your diary. Travelled to site. Carried out the work professionally. Solved the problem. Given advice and reassurance. Then you send the invoice.
And wait.
Perhaps the customer promises payment next week. Perhaps they stop responding altogether. Maybe they suddenly question the work despite being perfectly happy at the time.
Before long, you’ve spent more time chasing payment than you did completing the job itself.
The reality is that an unpaid invoice costs far more than the figure written at the bottom of the bill. It affects cash flow. It delays investment in your business. It creates unnecessary stress and can even impact your ability to pay suppliers or invest in your team.
Yet many business owners still hesitate to tackle the issue. We worry about upsetting customers, damaging relationships or appearing too aggressive.
But here’s the question: why should your business effectively become an interest-free lender?
You delivered the service. You incurred the costs. You provided the expertise. You should expect to be paid.
Whilst late payments cannot always be avoided, there are practical steps that can significantly reduce the risk:
-
Consider payment upfront for certain jobs
Emergency call-outs, one-off domestic treatments and high-value works are often good candidates for advance payment or deposits.
-
Set clear expectations from day one
Make your payment terms obvious before work begins. Customers should know exactly when payment is due and how it should be made.
-
Invoice quickly
The longer you leave it, the easier it becomes for the customer to forget, delay or deprioritise payment.
-
Don’t ignore overdue accounts
A polite reminder after the due date often resolves the issue quickly. The earlier you act, the better your chances of getting paid.
-
Review your problem customers
If a customer is regularly late paying, ask yourself whether they are still the right customer for your business.
-
Know when to seek support
There comes a point where chasing debts starts costing more than the debt itself. Having professional support available can often turn an awkward situation into a manageable one.
As an industry, we have become much better at recognising our professional value. We are trusted advisers, problem-solvers and public health professionals. Perhaps it’s also time we became better at valuing our time and expertise enough to insist on being paid properly and promptly for the work we do.
Because the most expensive job you’ll ever complete may not be the one that costs you the most to deliver.
It’s the one you never get paid for.
