LEDs and the phase out of fluorescent lamps
Fluorescent UVA lamps used in insect light traps (ILTs) are under increasing regulatory pressure due to their mercury content under the RoHS Directive. While still permitted under specific exemptions, these are subject to ongoing review and may be withdrawn or amended.
Guidance from Lighting Europe indicates that some relevant exemptions are due to expire around February 2027, although the outcome remains uncertain. Even if an exemption is not renewed, EU rules provide for a transition period – typically 12 to 18 months – to allow for a managed phase-out.
However, the market is already shifting toward LED-based ILTs, which improves sustainability, reduces energy costs, and eliminates mercury. As a result, Pelsis has developed the Aura LED, designed specifically for front-of-house environments. While many LED ILTs are suited to warehouses and industrial settings, Aura provides a discreet and efficient solution for cafés, restaurants and bars, without compromising on aesthetics.
