NPTA Introduces RSPH L2 Pest Management Training
The RSPH Level 2 Award in Pest Management is the standard general pest management qualification for pest control technicians. Technicians carrying out mixed pest control are expected to achieve this within 18 months of the start of their pest control career.
The guided learning time for the course is set at 54 hours, which is usually covered by a 6-day training course along with some mentoring from the technician’s employer or their tutor. The total recommended qualification time, which includes self-study, is 105 hours.
NPTA’s new Technical Manager, Grahame Turner, has been running this course very successfully for many years now, in different employments. And now, with Grahame returning to the NPTA, the NPTA will be offering this training around the country.
With the 5<25 scheme, NPTA has been providing mentoring, in the form of weekly one-to-one one-hour tutorials for learners. This will continue to be on offer, though will be organised as groups of trainees doing the qualification together. Then the new NPTA 6-day, highly interactive training course is split into three two-day modules and held over three weeks. The Modules are:
- Module 1 – Vertebrates
- Module 2 – Invertebrates
- Module 3 – H&S and Legislation
Having the modules separated allows for learners to concentrate on one topic at a time, which better allows for enhanced retention of knowledge. The one-hour modular exam is held at the end of each taught module. Candidates generally prefer this over the three-hour exam for all three modules at the same time, that is held at the end of intensive one-week courses.
The NPTA L2 Pest Management Award courses have been compiled based on years of experience from the three NPTA Technical Managers and others; and they are highly illustrated with multitudes of photos and videos of real-life examples of infestations and controls. Relevant materials and equipment also are demonstrated throughout the training.

The first courses, in June, will be in Nottingham and Bristol, followed shortly after by courses in Scotland and Maidstone. Visit the training section of the NPTA website (RSPH Qualifications – NPTA) to find dates and booking availability, along with the course syllabus and specimen exam papers. If the dates or venues listed are unsuitable for you, then please register your interest by emailing technical@npta.org.uk.
NPTA will be continuing to offer regional RSPH L2 Award in Safe Use of Rodenticides as well.
